Let's delve into some of his most acclaimed films, where his talent shines brightest, and the magic of cinema truly comes alive.

Born John Christopher Depp II in Kentucky, Johnny always wanted to be a star, but he initially thought he would be one of the rock and roll variety. After being gifted a guitar when he was 12, he started pursuing a career as a musician until a little friend named Nicolas Cage convinced him to audition for Wes Craven’s new horror flick. Depp won the role and continued working as an actor, initially falling into it “by accident.” What would follow was a long and illustrious career in the film industry, starring in franchises, cult classics, multiple collaborations with Tim Burton, and more. We at EdNews have researched across 10 different film critic sites to bring you the top five best Johnny Depp movies of all time. The List: Best Johnny Depp Movies, According to Fans

1. “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” (2003)

It’s hard to think of Johnny Depp’s name and not think it is synonymous with the dashing yet morally questionable pirate. Yet the world had no idea what was in store when he first donned that pirate hat in 2003. Ah, Captain Jack Sparrow - the name practically rolls off the tongue with a hint of rum and adventure! Giant Freakin' Robot perfectly captures the magic Depp imbued into this iconic role. His portrayal wasn't just good, it was legendary - a character so unforgettable it's hard to imagine anyone else at the helm of the Black Pearl. While Disney might have been unsure at first, there's no denying the Pirates franchise became a swashbuckling phenomenon, overflowing with fantasy, humor, and even a touch of romance.

But where did this captivating captain come from? According to 96.3KKLZ, Depp channeled a surprising duo for inspiration: the legendary rockstar Keith Richards and the cartoon skunk, Pepé Le Pew. The result? A delightfully eccentric, rum-loving rogue who stole our hearts.

MovieWeb adds another layer to the Captain's legacy. This wasn't just a fun performance; it was a career-defining one. Sparrow launched Depp into the A-list, transforming him from a cult favorite into a box office powerhouse. The critical acclaim followed suit, with Depp earning a Screen Actors Guild Award and nominations at the Oscars, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes. So next time you set sail on a cinematic adventure, raise a metaphorical glass to Captain Jack Sparrow - a testament to Johnny Depp's undeniable talent and a character forever etched in pop culture history.

2. “Edward Scissorhands” (1990)

One of Depp’s more personal and touching performances comes in the form of “Edward Scissorhands.” This would also mark the first of many collaborations between Depp and filmmaker Tim Burton. As MovieWeb explains, this film unveils the story of Edward, an unfinished creation with a heart of gold – and unfortunately, scissors for hands. Depp brings Edward to life with such tenderness and vulnerability that you can't help but root for this gentle giant despite his unconventional appearance.

The film isn't just a visually stunning fantasy; it's a film that tugs at the heartstrings. Despite the fantastical elements, Depp's portrayal makes Edward a relatable character yearning for connection and acceptance in a world that fears what's different. The film resonated deeply with audiences and critics alike, grossing over four times its budget.

And for Depp fans, “Edward Scissorhands” holds a special place. Giant Freakin' Robot claims it to be the pinnacle of his eight collaborations with visionary director Tim Burton. This melancholic masterpiece showcases their creative synergy at its finest.

MenSXP offers a glimpse into the narrative, describing Edward's journey from lonely isolation to a tentative acceptance within a suburban community. A kind woman named Peg takes him in, but Edward's presence soon disrupts the idyllic facade, highlighting the darkness that can lurk beneath a picture-perfect exterior. Edward Scissorhands is a film that lingers long after the credits roll, prompting reflection on themes of acceptance, self-discovery, and the beauty found in the most unexpected places.

3. “Donnie Brasco” (1997)

While Depp is known for playing in a number of biopics throughout his career, there is no greater performance than in “Donnie Brasco.” Before Captain Jack Sparrow and Edward Scissorhands became pop culture icons, Johnny Depp took a dramatic shift with his role in Donnie Brasco, according to GoldDerby. This isn't your typical quirky Depp flick; it is a plunge into the gritty world of undercover operations and organized crime. Depp embodied Joseph Pistone, a real-life FBI agent who went deep undercover as Donnie Brasco, charming his way into the ranks of the Bonanno crime family.

The film isn't just a showcase for Depp's versatility; it was a turning point in his career. GoldDerby also likes how this movie silenced doubters who questioned Depp's ability to handle a mainstream genre film, especially one opposite a heavyweight like Al Pacino. And let's talk about Pacino! Chillopedia describes him as a notorious gangster practically born to play these roles, making their on-screen dynamic a true meeting of the titans.

Giant Freakin' Robot delves into the moral tightrope Brasco walks. The lines blur between undercover agent and hardened criminal as he befriends Lefty Ruggiero, a hitman within the mafia. The film explores the psychological toll of such deep undercover work, forcing Brasco to confront a chilling question: can he turn in his newfound friend or risk his entire mission?

With all that being said, it's more than just a mafia movie; it's a suspenseful exploration of identity, loyalty, and the razor-thin line between duty and deception. Depp delivers a powerful performance, proving his range as an actor and leaving audiences both entertained and engrossed.

4. “Ed Wood” (1994)

Another biopic? Yes, but this comes in the form of Depp’s first tackling of a real-life persona in the form of quirky director “Ed Wood.” This also marks the second team-up of Depp and Burton following another “Ed,” “Edward Scissorhands.”

Calling Ed Wood “controversial” might be an understatement. This 1950s filmmaker churned out movies so infamously awful, they've achieved a cult status all their own. But before you subject yourself to the glorious (or excruciating) experience of watching a genuine Ed Wood flick, there's a far more enjoyable option: Tim Burton's biopic, “Ed Wood,” according to The Review Geek.

What makes it so great? This film isn't just a celebration of Ed Wood's, ahem, “unique” cinematic vision; it's a showcase for Johnny Depp's phenomenal acting talents. Let's face it, Depp's own quirky charm makes him the perfect person to portray the eccentric Ed Wood. The film is a visual treat as well, with the black and white aesthetic perfectly capturing the era and Ed Wood's low-budget, one-take filmmaking philosophy.

Wealth of Geeks also points out the film's critical acclaim, praising it as one of the best of the year and Depp's performance earning him a Golden Globe nomination. But “Ed Wood” is more than just awards and accolades. The Cinemaholic emphasizes the heart of the story: Ed Wood's unwavering passion for filmmaking and his loyal crew of Hollywood misfits who helped him bring his bizarre visions to life, no matter how shoestring the budget. This is a film that's equal parts hilarious, heartwarming, and strangely inspiring.

5. “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” (1994)

While deservingly so, Leonardo DiCaprio gets most of the accolades and praise for his performance of Arnie, Depp’s titular character; Gilbert stands as the grounding heart and soul behind “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.”

Get ready for a film that will tug at your heartstrings and leave you wanting more. This isn't your typical Hollywood blockbuster; it's a poignant slice-of-life story that showcases Johnny Depp's acting chops at their finest, according to The Review Geek. Depp portrays Gilbert Grape, a man burdened with responsibility. He juggles caring for his younger brother Arnie and his morbidly obese mother, all while working a dead-end job in their small Midwestern town.

The film's magic lies in the heartwarming bond between Gilbert and Arnie. Despite their occasional squabbles, their love for each other shines through in every scene. The Review Geek even goes so far as to say watching them is a joy, leaving viewers with a genuine sense of loss by the film's end.

The Cinemaholic delves deeper into Gilbert's world, describing him as a man trapped by routine and responsibility. Low wages, long hours, and the weight of family care leave little room for dreams or personal fulfillment. But a spark ignites when a free-spirited girl enters their lives, disrupting the established patterns and forcing Gilbert to confront his desires for a different kind of life.

Nerd Stash emphasizes the film's exploration of family dynamics. While Gilbert may feel stifled by his circumstances, his love for his brother and mother is undeniable. “What's Eating Gilbert Grape” offers a beautiful portrayal of familial bonds, reminding us of the power of love, even amidst hardship.

People stand by Johnny Depp because through evidence in a court of law, he proved he was abused by Amber Heard. He also proved through evidence that Amber Heard made FALSE accusations against him. People watched it happen live. It’s a shame how media refuses to accept that a Male can be a victim of DV. It’s as if they want the public to ignore it when a false accuser is exposed. You need to be angry with AH for making it worse for REAL victims

Agree with your list, but truly, you could’ve done a top 50 and still would miss one or two. 🤣

Blow should be on this list.

Have to agree on Finding Neverland. Also, Benny & June. Fabulous actor. Very creative person. Always look forward to his work. Do not know him personally but from interviews I’ve seen, and comments from many others, seems like a very kind and gentle person. I believe there is that part of him in the characters he plays. There is a calmness.
